Hardwood flooring over particle board: Is it possible?

Hardwood flooring over particle board: Is it possible?

No–and this shouldn't be confused with plywood. Particleboard resembles oatmeal, and hardwood flooring needs a robust and sturdy subfloor.

Particleboard isn’t structurally sound!

How wood floors are installed

Solid wood floors are installed via the traditional tongue and groove nail down. The pieces form a mat, and then the installer will nail it to the subfloor.

Particleboard doesn’t grip the nails firmly enough. That will interfere with the integrity of your wood floors. Installers will recommend plywood of a ¾-inch or larger thickness or OSB.

We can't stress this enough. Don't take it on as a DIY project!

Always have your hardwood floors professionally installed

People sometimes ask us why it’s so important to have your hardwood floors (or any other surface) professionally installed.

Professionals have the expertise and skills to spot potential problems before they happen. If they do occur, the professionals know how to attend to them quickly and efficiently.

You’ll also save time and money in the long term. You'll avoid costly repairs and re-doing something repeatedly–only to have the same outcome.

Why you should protect your investment

  1. Long-lasting beauty. Hardwood flooring lasts for decades unless there's structural damage.
  2. Versatility: Wood floors work with any decor from the most traditional to urban modern, California coastal, Mid-Century, and more.
When you need a change, sand your wood flooring and stain another color.
  1. Hardwood increases property values. You'll recoup at least 70-80% of the initial cost, as reflected in your property values.
